I used this book for my fourth year medical school elective "Emergency Ultrasound." I really can't praise this book more highly. It breaks down various ultrasound examinations (FAST, cardiac echos, 1st trimester pregnancy, gallbladder, etc) in a straight forward manner that even those having no experience with ultrasound could understand (like myself since my school doesn't really emphasize ultrasound in their curriculum). The accompanying DVD was also very helpful in demonstrating these techniques in real time. I also appreciate how the authors would introduce the techniques by reviewing the relevant anatomy first (making one aware of important structures) and used data with resources to back up their conclusions (ex. predicting fluid responsiveness using the passive leg raise with stroke volume estimated by ultrasound). Finally, in comparison to other various introductory ultrasound books I purchased before taking my elective, this book stood out among the other because it gave quantitative numbers/measurements on various topics (EPSS for estimating EF, diameter of the aorta measured by ultrasound that should raise concern for AAA, etc) backed by research which was very helpful and added to the utility of performing ultrasound on the patients I encountered.

Whether you are new to emergency US or you run an emergency fellowship, this is the book for you. It was hard to imagine that the previous editions could be improved, but the authors have well and truly done it. Comprehensive, readable, with very high standards of schematics and ultrasound images, this book covers the breadth of ED US practice very well and goes into a great amount of depth in the always-popular areas of critical care and echocardiography. My copy is chained to the bookcase in our education office and there's always a queue to read it. Well done to the authors for an outstanding achievement. Cheers Justin Bowra, Sydney Australia
The preferred product for most EM ultrasound fellowships. Yes, it is more a reference text than a quick guide, but it is clear and rapidly accessible. The CD is the quick guide and is well done.
